Ballinamore P.P.S. enters Basketball teams into Connacht
Colleges Competitions. We have first, second, Cadette and Senior basketball
teams each year. Basketball is very strong in the school and our first year
girls won the Cadette Basketball 2005/06 Division C Our first match was away to Manorhamilton. The first
quarter of the game was very tense with a score line of 7 points to 6 to the
home team. Then in the second quarter Ballinamore took control and led by 20
points to 7 at the end. During the third quarter we increased our lead and by
the end the final score was Ballinamore 42 Manor. 13 Our next game was at home to Manorhamilton on 12th
October. Again the first quarter was a close encounter and we led by 2 points.
However once we settled down we ran out easy winners with a final score of 20
points to 4. Due to the fact that Ballinamore didn’t have to play Mohill they went straight to the Regional Finals which took place on Mon. 21st Nov. in Carrick on Shannon. Our opposition was a very strong Castlerea team who settled very quickly and it was a constant struggle for the Ballinamore girls to get a score. Our girls kept trying but ended on the losing side. It was a good achievement to get that far by the team and management. A big thank you to all who took part in training and matches and those who helped with score sheets etc. PANEL:Sheila Walshe, Aoife Smith, Claire Cumiskey, Sinead

This brought them to the quarter finals, against Castlerea in Carrick on Shannon. During an excellent game Ballinamore showed a lot of dominance, but victory was snatched from them in the closing minute. The team showed a promising start to their basketball career in post primary school. Junior Girls Basketball Team Emma Reynolds Aishling Duignan Siobhan Mc Cartin Ciara Mc Loughlin Shauna Cullen Dannielle Mc Govern Michelle Reynolds Sinead Dowd Josephine Maguire Lauren Mc Grory Niamh Mulvanerty Katie Duignan Deborah Gilheaney Danielle Mc Tague Tara Creamer The Junior Team played Manorhamilton in Ballinamore in February, but unfortunately did not win, even though they showed excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. In March they also played Manorhamilton but again victory was not to be. However, next year we are hoping to see some great results from such a high spirited team. Cadette Girls Basketball Team Sheila Walsh Martha Ward Aishling Sammon Niamh Smith Sinead Benison Emma O’Dell Claire Plunkett Catherine Holohan Nora Mc Govern Claire Cumiskey Aoife Smith Roisin Mc Tague Leighann Gallagher Aoife Fox Senior Girls Basketball Team Olivia Martin Erin Gilheany Sarah Curran Maeve Murphy Laura Brennan Kate Mc Tague Kirby Gilgunn Claire Fanning Carol O’Connor Catherine Smith Laura Creamer Amy Hanly Sinead Mc Loughlin Erin Moran In Autumn the Cadette Team played a number of games
but they did not succeed in getting to the Finals. The Senior Girls were
also unfortunate in that they were narrowly defeated by Manorhamilton in
their matches. All in all it has been a very busy year, thanks goes to all those involved. Basketball 2004/2005 Second Years have started off their campaign with the best possible results. The have comprehensively overcome all of their opposition in their first three games against Castlrea, Manorhamilton and Mohill. They have two games left, one on Fri 25th Feb away to Roscommon and the final game in the group is against Boyle at home. First Years didn’t have the best of starts against a very strong Castlerea team but after this baptism of fire they have done very well in their last two games by beating Manorhamilton by the narrowest of margins 2pts and on Wed 23rd Feb they had a comprehensive victory over Mohill when they defeated them by 18 pts to 0. Their next game is on Fri 25th Feb when they play away to Roscommon.Girls Senior and Cadette
basketball began with our debut match against Manorhamilton on the 11/10/04. The Cadettes won by 7
points on a final score of Ballinamore
16 points , Manorhamilton 9 points. Unfortunately the Seniors lost to
Manorhamilton. Our next outing was to
Mohill on the 14/10/04 where again our Cadettes were victorious and a final
score of 16 points to 13 was achieved. Despite a valiant effort by the Seniors
in the third quarter, the score gap proved to be too great. Our first home game was
against Roscommon on the 19/10/04 and the Cadettes continued their winning
streak with a final score of Ballinamore 16 , Roscommon 14 after extra-time. Even though the Seniors
tried their best on home ground it wasn’t just good enough on this occasion. Cadettes are now through to the semi-finals on Nov 25th in the Sligo Sports Complex where they will play the runners up of the Donegal competition. Basketball 2003/2004 In 2003-04 four teams took part in the Lonleitros League for girls. They were Senior, Cadette, Junior and Minor Leagues. Unfortunately the Senior, Cadette and Junior teams did not qualify for the finals. However the Minors won the Lonleitros League by defeating St. Clare’s Comprehensive, Manorhamilton, Mercy Convent, Roscommon, Marion College, Mohill and Castlerea Community School in the final. This qualified the team for a North West semi-final against Loreto College, Letterkenny. They won 27-15. On Tuesday March 16th they played in the North-West Final in Sligo, but were unfortunately beaten.Team Pictures: First Year Lonleitros Champions 2004
