Geographical Field Study 2008-2009

For the 2009 leaving Cert. examination in Geography students must complete a geographical investigation, a report on which accounts for 20% of their final mark.

Our teachers choose the topic, “ CHANGING LAND USE IN A RURAL SETTING” and carried out their study on a local plantation owned by Mr. Kevin Murphy.

We decided to study the impact the forestry plantation had on ground cover biodiversity, tree heights and habitats. Our study involved two main methods of gathering;

Ø      A 50m line of transect

Ø      Ground cover using a 1m square quadrat.

Both leaving cert. classes has now finished their fieldwork and is currently writing up their reports. Mr. Burns and Mr. Mullen conducted the study with both classes. Thanks to Mr. Kevin Murphy for permission to use his land for the field study.
