Geography Field Trip

As part of the Leaving Cert. Geography Syllabus students have to complete a field study. This year our 2 geography classes completed a study of erosion of the local, Yellow river.

We had 3 sites of investigation for our study; Stralongford Bridge, Pat Gilhooley’s field below Mill Bridge and Kilty barden close to St. John’s Lake.

The class was divide into 3 groups and each group had to carry out the measurements at the 3 sites.

We measured the width, depth, speed and discharge as well as the size of debris ( stones ) at each of the 3 sites.

Back in the classroom students have to do various calculations, draw graphs, complete sketch maps and write up results, conclusions and evaluations. A report on the field study accounts for 20% of the final mark in Geography. The remaining 80% is decide on the final exam in June.
