In April 2009, the green schools committee in Meanscoil Fatima organised a spring clean in the school. Students helped to tidy and clean up around the school as well as their lockers. This was co-ordinated by Ms. Colum.

Green Schools Award Ceremony. 

In April 2008 Ballinamore PPS held a presentation in Ballinamore Hall for their success in achieving Green Flag status for recycling and waste management on the three sites that make up our school. 

Local councillors presented the flags to each of the classes involved and students, teachers and local businesses were in attendance along with Ms. Aine Carr, Co. Leitrim Environmental Officer. 

Well done to the three classes involved and their teachers.

Ms. Colum and her Agricultural Science class – St. Felim’s.

Ms. Cooney and her Home Economics class – Vocational School.

Mr. Mullen and class 3A – Meanscoil Fatima. 

The three flags will be raised outside the three schools shortly. 

Well done to all concerned.

Congratulations to the Green School teams in each of our 3 school campuses; St. Felim’s, Meanscoil Fatima and Ballinamore Vocational School on successfully being awarded A Green  Flag for each site. This leaves Ballinamore PPS and it’s 3 sites with an  unprecedented 3 flags. 

Having completed a 2 year programme in Litter and Waste Management as well as implementing a number of initiatives on reducing waste and awareness raising we were delighted to hear of our successful applications. 

In September 2006 Ms.Colum, Ms.Cooney and Mr Mullen decided to implement the Green Schools Programme. Ms Colum and her Agricultural Science class took responsibility for St. Felim’s, Ms. Cooney and her Fourth year Home Ec. Class – the Vocational School while Mr. Mullen and his 3A CSPE class took Meanscoil Fatima. 

An official awards ceremony is due to take place in Galway on February 20th where we will receive our flags.

There will also be a designated day in school when the 3 flags will be officially raised. 

We look forward to these dates and once again a big well done to all teachers and pupils for their efforts and their successes.


In Autumn 2006 Ballinamore PPS joined the Green Schools Programme. They have applied for a green flag for each of the 3 Campuses, St. felims, Meanscoil Fatima and the Vocational School under the direction of Ms. Colum, Mr. Mullen and Ms. Cooney. 

A number of initiatives have been undertaken in each school under the theme of "Litter and Waste Management". 

A major recycling plan was put into operation as well as a number of awareness raising events.  A number of visits were made to the local recycling centre in Ballianamore by each class. videos were shown and poster competitions were held. A talk was organised on compostin, a wormery and leaf mould which was attended by relevant classes and local business people.

Our school be assessed for its Green Flag by an Taisce and the Leitrim County Council.

Below is a list of recent events that were organised as part of the programme for Feb. and Mar. 

bulletOn Feb 27th- Green schools committee and Ms. Cooney visited Rossinver for Stage 1 of the Natural trail Pilot Programme.
bulletMarch 10th- Green Shools committee and Ms. Colum visited Drumkeeran for a Seminar on Irish Flora and Fauna by Barbara McInerney (O.P.W).
bulletMarch 15th- Michael Reynolds, Litter warden(LCC) and Aine Carr, Enviromental Education Officier (LCC) visited our school to present 1st year students with prize for anti Litter Posters.
bulletMarch 28th- Class 2A visited Mohill recycling centre and were given a talk by enviromental officier, Ms. Aine Carr.
They also visited the Mohill Animal Rescue Centre and donated shredded paper for bedding of animals. This paper was collected in the school over the previous few months.
