Mentoring Programme

2009-2010 Mentors

2008-2009 Mentors

In 2007  a mentoring programme was set up for our first year students by Career Guidance teacher, Mrs. Mc Namara. The mentoring system is being organised to help First year students familiarise themselves with their new school and to provide assistance for them from our fourth years.

Mentoring

This year the mentoring programme, which was set up last year was continued with the present fourth years and new first years. The process was carried out in the same way as last year.

Interviews were carried out to select 20 mentors and 4 subs, from the fourth years that volunteered for the job. The selected fourth years received a day of training. We received training on how to deal with any problems the mentees might have settling in to school. We also learnt communication skills.

When we met the mentees for the first time we told them about ourselves, so they could get to know us. Over the weeks, we then got to know the first years, and they got to know each other. We went down to see the first years about once every two weeks. As we talked to them and got to know them, we did quizzes and played board games. In the final few weeks the weather was better so we were able to go outside and play ball games.

To help us bond with the first years we all went on a trip to Boda Borg at Loch Key Forest Park. We divided into our different groups to complete different physical and mental challenges. The activities had us crawling through tunnels, sitting on plastic eggs and balancing on ropes. All this added up to a lot of laughs and a great day out.

Mentoring has been a great experience for all involved. I would defintely recommend the next fourth years get involved!

Here are some thoughts about the programme from mentors and first years:
