5th
Year Geography Field Trip 28th September 2010.
On Tuesday 28th September our two Geography teachers, Mr. Mullen and Ms.
Clarke took one of our Leaving Cert. Classes to a local plantation about 20
minutes walk from St. Felim’s.
The topic they are doing this year is “ Changing Landuse in a Rural
Setting” which will account for 20% of their final mark in the subject.
During their field trip they completed a 50m transect along the edge of a
forest and a 50m transect along a hedgerow in an adjoining meadow. In the
classroom we will plot a graph of both transects and then compare to find out
which has the greater variety of tree layers and therefore provide a better
habitat for wildlife.
We also threw a quadrat twice in the forest and
in the meadow to examine groundcover species. In the classroom we will analse
our findings to see which has the greater biodiversity ie. Greater variety of
species. The first draft on this is due on November 5th 2010. The other
Geography class will soon be completing their field study which will also be
carried out on the same topic.
